Laerskool Dr. Annecke Primary is situated in the town of Letsitele, Limpopo Province. Letsitele is a small rural town in the Letaba River Valley, approximately 30 km from Tzaneen. The school was founded in 1950, and named after the late Dr. Siegfried Annecke, a well known entomologist who did extensive research on the malaria-carrying mosquito. At the turn of the century and for the following four or five decades of the 1900’s the Letaba Valley was known as the “Valley of death”because of the fatalities caused by malaria.

Dr. Siegfried Annecke’s research contributed a great deal to control  and treat Malaria effectively.

Since 1950, with an enrolment of 51 learners, the school has grown steadily and the current enrolment is 430 learners (52% English speaking learners and 48% Afrikaans speaking learners), 17 educators, 3 admin staff members and 6 support staff members. In 2000 the school transformed to a parallel medium school, offering a choice of instruction in either Afrikaans or English medium. This enabled the school to accommodate both the farming communities and the rural communities of neighbouring settlements.

Learners of Laerskool Dr Annecke are truly privileged to receive their primary school education in such beautiful surroundings.

Laerskool Dr. Annecke Primary has a proud tradition, reinforced through the years by quality education and the vision of holistic education, developing not only the learner’s academic potential, but also other important aspects such as sportsmanship, leadership, entrepreneurship and creativity. The learners are therefore encouraged to  participate in various extra mural activities including adventure camps and visits to eco centres, cultural activities e.g revues and Eisteddfodand sport activities including athletics, cross country, netball, rugby, hockey, tennis and cricket.

The school is currently embarking on a project to introduce more relevant technological learner support to the class rooms by means of interactive white boards, media projectors and internet availability in the classrooms.

A fully functional media centre is available for learners which includes

various  forms of media for reading and acquiring information for tasks

and projects. A number of computers are also available for use by

learners.

A great deal of sport development is being done and learners from both language groups are on a regular basis included in the Limpopo Province Athletics, u/13 Cravenweek & u/12 rugby, u/13 and u/12 Netball and Hockey teams. Many of our teams have been Limpopo champions in previous years.  The u/10 rugby team is the 2015 Limpopo Champion for medium schools.  Learners also participate in sport codes and cultural activities outside the school and many participate and receive provincial colours in gymnastics, ring ball, horse riding, modern dancing, ballet, agricultural youth shows etc.

In addition to a dedicated teaching staff, the school has a wellorganizedand effective Admin department. The financial and academic administration is managed by a state of the art web based administration programme.

A very involved and supporting SGB ensure that the academic standards are kept on a high level and that the infrastructure and sport facilities are developed and maintained. The SGB also initialise fund raiser project to finance projects in order to enhance teaching and learning.

Unfortunately the school receive minimal financial support from the Education Department in order to  sustainour vision of quality education.

In order to ensure  class sizes which are conducive for effective education,  provide educators for both language groups,    as well as an effective admin department and support staff, the SGB  appoints  additional teachers,  three administrative staff members and six support staff members. This is financed by school funds contributions and fund raisers.

The acquisition of learner support material, e.g. computers, computer software, relevant textbooks, maintenance of the school buildings and school grounds, development and maintenance of sport facilities and acquisition of sport equipment, and bursaries to those who can’t afford the school fees, are all financed by fund raisers.

Quality education at our school, and eventually education in South Africa will only be sustainable if supported by the community and social partners  that have the same vision we do – to develop every learners’ potential to its fullest and equip every learner with the knowledge and skills to become a responsible and productive citizen in our beautiful South Africa.

Laerskool Dr Annecke Primary is in the true sense a Centre of Excellence
